1st Annual Save a Tooth and Brighten a Child's Smile Day
The alarming statistics of African-American children who have not been seen by a dentist prompted the Delta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to host their 1st Annual Save A Tooth and Brighten A Child's Smile Day. This event, chaired by Fabiola Gaines, took place on March 22, 2008 at the J. B. Callahan Neighborhood Center from 9:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. for children who live in the Parramore area. The chapter partnered with the Orange Blossom Family Center, Parramore Kidz Zone, Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc., the Department of Children and Families, Access Connection, and Dr. Brian O. Coleman, D. M.D., P. A. (Omega Dental Group), who performed all of the screenings. The Orange Blossom Family Center will follow up and provide dental services based on the screening recommendations.
The turnout was excellent, and parents and children expressed gratitude not only for the screenings, but also for the refreshments (fruit, cheese, juice, milk, yogurt, and bottled water), the play area activities (Moonwalk and Obstacle Course), and a photograph taken with Dr. Coleman. Parents expressed their appreciation to everyone involved for taking the time to provide these services for their children.
Chief Val Demmings of the Orlando Police Department attended the event and Mayor Buddy Dyer provided a proclamation to the Delta Omicron Omega Chapter for its vision and commitment to the families of our city.
