Recycled Art Fun To Green Up America

The members of Delta Omicron Omega Chapter joined the ranks of former Vice President Al Gore, the City of Orlando and other environmentally concerned organizations in the effort to “Green Up America!” The members of the sorority worked in conjuction with Pineloch Elementary School in Orlando to present a lesson using recycled materials. The principal, Dr. Janice Choice selected 30 fourth and fifth grade honor students to participate in this event on March 27, 2007.

Each table of 6 students included a member of Delta Omicron Omega Chapter and the object for those participating was to work in small groups to create one piece of art using the materials available within the group. The recycled materials included various items such as egg cartons, thread spools and other products that were collected for the event.

Before the activity began, Lynn Irby spoke to the students regarding the value of Recycling and Economics by using the three “R's” - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle with tips on how to use this concept to save and make money.

Refreshments were served as creativity flowed into rockets, houses, robots, animals, mobiles and wall displays. Learning and fun was evident to all of the students who were involved. A certificate was given to each of the students for their participation.
